One Expert’s Advice For Our Unique Parenting Era
It feels different, but is it? And what should we do?
It hasn’t been possible to know exactly where your kid is at all times before.
We haven’t really had to think about generative AI friends before.
Smartphones haven’t been as essential for as many aspects of life before.
Today, parents face a unique set of challenges with our kids while also navigating generative AI fueled changes and an array of apps and devices we could use to help us parent.
But in the past, parents faced fears about the radio, the TV, video games, and the internet. And parents learned. They adapted. The world didn’t end.
What I liked most about my recent interview with Dr. Susan Walker is her reminder that parents’ most powerful tool for navigating situations — our ability to connect with each other — hasn’t disappeared. It’s actually been amplified.
Now, if we want to see if someone has a similar parenting question or challenge in about 10 minutes we can ask:
A group of strangers
A group of friends
Groups of friends to ask strangers for us
AI trained on our favorite advice (e.g. Emily Oster’s ParentData or Dr. Becky) and then ask our friends for their thoughts on that advice.
Kind of incredible.
I had the week off so I got motivated to connect with other parents. Feeling accomplished after:
Talking with the dad who led The Dad Time Out Show to 98 episodes (he found great benefit in community)
Started using Instagram and Threads again (early days but found some winning folks like The Gamer Educator)
Asking two more parents about tech and parenting (posts to come)
Reached out to group chats and a few experts about AI for kids learning and AI friends (very interesting + posts to come)
Looking forward to sharing more and wishing you the best on your own new parenting connections.
